Important ChangesQUT’s Equity Scholarships team welcomes the Australian Government’s proposed changes to Student Income Support (which includes changes to Centrelink payments and Commonwealth Scholarships). From 2010 onwards, new Commonwealth Scholarships will be awarded and paid by Centrelink to a significantly increased number of recipients. Applications for Indigenous Access Scholarships will be made directly to QUT. Existing Commonwealth Scholarship recipients will continue to be paid by QUT. For further detail of the proposed reforms to Student Income Support, visit home.deewr.gov.au In addition, QUT’s Equity Scholarships Scheme will continue to provide up to $2.5 million in scholarships, bursaries and computers to low-income students – including those who are not eligible for Commonwealth Scholarships. We are currently developing the details of the QUT Scheme to ensure that as many students as possible can receive financial support to study. To receive the latest information as it becomes available, please join our mailing list by emailing equityscholarships@qut.edu.au At this stage, we can confirm that all Indigenous students and Q-Step students commencing at QUT in 2010 will receive a minimum $1,000 Equity Bursary. All commencing Smith Family ‘Learning for Life’ students will receive a minimum $2,500 QUT Equity Scholarship. The QUT Equity Scholarships application will be available in August from www.equity.qut.edu.au/scholarships and must be submitted directly to QUT before the closing date of 31 October 2009. Please note given the above changes the below information is subject to change when further guidelines are provided by the Commonwealth Government. OverviewMany students experience difficulty with the costs of living and studying. Under QUT’s Equity Scholarship Scheme, new and continuing QUT students from low-income backgrounds have access to a wealth of financial support. In 2010, QUT students will have access to more than $9 million in scholarships, bursaries and computers. That’s more than 1500 scholarships in 2010. Many of these scholarships are designed specifically for Indigenous and low-income students who have to relocate to study, require help with accommodation expenses or simply need help to meet the costs associated with study. QUT’s Q-Step Program helps low-income students and QUT’s Oodgeroo Unit assists Indigenous students. QUT’s scholarship guarantee gives students, accepted through Q-Step or who are Indigenous Australians commencing at QUT in 2010, a $500 Equity Starter Bursary (in Week 1) plus one of the scholarships outlined above. Commonwealth ScholarshipsThe Commonwealth Scholarships Program was introduced by the Commonwealth In 2010, QUT expects to have more than 800 Commonwealth Scholarships available. There are five types of Commonwealth Scholarships available at QUT: Commonwealth Education Costs Scholarship (CECS) are valued at approximately $2250 per year for up to four years. National Priority Scholarship (NPS) are valued at approximately $2250 per year for up to four years. This scholarship is for students studying in a national priority discipline. Commonwealth Accommodation Scholarships (CAS) are valued at approximately $4500 per year for up to four years and are designed to assist students from rural and regional areas who have had to relocate, and have incurred additional accommodation costs, in order to undertake study. National Accommodation Scholarships (NAS) are valued at approximately $4500 per year for up to four years and are designed to assist students who have had to relocate more than 100 kilometres, and have incurred additional accommodation costs, in order to undertake a specialist course. Indigenous Access Scholarships (IAS) are once-only scholarships valued at approximately $4200 to assist Indigenous students, especially commencing students who relocate to undertake their first undergraduate course. ScholarshipsQUT Equity scholarships valued at $2500 each (for one year only) are available to eligible low-income students (except visiting, international and cross-institutional students). These scholarships are designed to assist students with the various costs associated with university study. BursariesEquity bursaries valued at $1000 each (paid for one year only) are awarded each year to low-income students. All low-income QUT students are eligible to apply (except visiting and cross-institutional students). Computer schemeThe QUT Equity Computer Scheme provides assistance to new and continuing students by providing free reconditioned desk-top computers with free dial-up internet access and a USB drive to transport electronic files. Up to 200 computers will be available in 2010. Students should apply once they have enrolled at QUT using the form available at www.equity.qut.edu.au. Available Semester 1 only. Faculty equity bursariesSome faculties have additional funds to provide bursaries and scholarships to eligible low-income students. Applicants will not be required to forward evidence to support the information provided on their scholarship application form to the QUT Equity Section unless offered an equity scholarship in January, 2009.
