Are you eligible for the program?

Step 1

The program is open to both domestic and international Year 12 secondary students undertaking the Queensland Certificate of Education, NSW High School Certificate, International Baccalaureate and/or Accelerated Christian Education (or equivalent) programs.

To be eligible for the program students need to be high-achieving students who:

            • display grades of a B average or above with a minimum of a B minus in English
            • are capable of undertaking university level study in addition to their Year 12 study load
            • have the support of their school and parents/guardians.
If you do not meet these entry requirements please do not submit an application, as your priority should be achieving your best results in your school studies.

Seek school and parent/guardian permission

Step 2In order to take part in the program you will need permission from your school as well as your parents/guardians. This is very important as you may need to be away from school at times in order to attend university lectures and tutorials.

Undertaking university level studies while completing Year 12 requires a lot of commitment. You may want to consider how much time you spend on other commitments such as sports and part-time work. Your school and your parent/guardian will be able to guide you in making the best decision for you, to enable you to successfully complete your Year 12 studies. Before applying you should read the Partnership Agreement document to know what will be expected of you as a participant in START QUT.

Download the Expression of Interest Form

Step 3Once you have established you are eligible for the START QUT Program you need to download the Expression of Interest Form (EIF). You will need to fill out the details on this form and return to QUT Student Business Services by the closing date.

You must ensure that you put your Learning Unique Identifier (LUI) number on your form. Applications that are missing LUI numbers will not be accepted. Steps 4 to 6 below give you more information on how to fill out other parts of the form.

Intake for 2011 will open in August 2010.

The application form will be available for download from this page when applications open.

Choose your subjects

Step 4Section two of the EIF asks you to nominate your proposed enrolment program. You can nominate two unit (subject) preferences for each semester. When considering what units to undertake you should consider:

              • what the unit is about and will I enjoy it
              • the contact hours (number of hours you need to be in classes each week)
              • what campus the unit is offered on
              • what kinds of assessment the unit involves. For example units with group assignments will require you to attend group meetings outside of your lecture and tutorial times.

For more information on the units available please visit the units on offer page of this website.
Please note Semester 1, 2011 timetables are expected to be released in late October 2010. You should ensure your application is submitted by the due date even if your timetable is not yet available. Once your application has been approved you will be given the opportunity to change subjects should the released timetable not suit your school timetable.

Provide all relevant documents and signatures

Step 5

To participate in the program you need the permision of your parent/guardian as well as your school principal. You may need to take some time away from school in order to attend lectures and tutorials so your school needs to say that's ok for you to do.

You also need to provide a copy of your semester 1 Year 11 results, and semester 2 results where available. This is to show that you fit the eligibility requirements as listed above. Your guidance officer should attach these to your EIF for you.

For international students you need to supply a certified copy of your current visa, certified copies of all previous Senior/High School qualifications, and certified copies of any English language test results. Certified documents must be certified by a Justice of the peace or a Commissioner for declarations.

It is important to supply all requested information - applications that are submitted without all the correct information may be rejected. Please refer to section 6 of the EIF Form for more information.

Submit your application before the due date

Step 6Once you have filled out all the information, attached any necessary documents and the form has been signed by the appropriate people, hand your application form into your guidance officer or school START QUT contact. They will then make sure that all of this information is correct before sending your application in.

Applications for Semester 1, 2010 will open on 2 August 2010. They will close on 31 October 2010. Applications postmarked on or before this date will be considered as on-time.

Late, faxed or emailed applications will not be accepted.

To esnure your application is received on time please lodged in person at the Student Centre on any QUT campus or mail to:

What happens next?

Step 7You will receive a letter of acknowledgement within 10 working days of your application being received. Any requests for further information or supporting documents will be included in this letter. (If you need to provide any further information, the faster you do this, the faster we can process your application).

Your application will then be assessed based on your eligibility. A letter of offer detailing if you have been successful in applying to START QUT will be sent out once your application has been assessed. In the case that your eligibility is on the borderline your application will be sent to the Faculty for approval and your letter may take a little longer.

To accept your offer you will need to follow the directions in your letter of offer. Details for START QUT orientation will be mailed out to you so please ensure your contact address is correct on your application. Accept your offer, come along to orientation and start your University experience at QUT.
