General Scholarship FAQsWhat is a Scholarship?At QUT, a scholarship is an award selected on a basis of specified criteria which is to assist a student to undertake or complete a program of study at the University. A scholarship may take the form of monetary assistance or reduction in specified costs such as tuition fees or HECS. How do I apply?Once you have identified a scholarship that matches your circumstances, you must ensure that you have read and followed the eligibility and application requirements for each scholarship. The application must be received by the required date and you must supply all the required documents indicated for the applicable scholarship. Late applications will not be accepted. Where do I get an application form from?Applications can be obtained by the area responsible for administering the scholarship. For example, if you want to apply for a Dean’s Scholars Program in the Engineering, you would need to contact the Faculty of Built Environment and Engineering. Alternatively you could go to the university scholarship webpage and obtain an application from there. www.scholarships.qut.edu.au Do I need to apply through QTAC?With some scholarships you may be required to apply through QTAC as well as sending an application to the university. Check the terms and conditions of the scholarships you are applying to confirm application method. Can I apply for other scholarships?Yes, you should apply for all scholarships that you qualify for. However, some QUT scholarships have conditions which do not allow you to hold more than one award. Can an international student receive a scholarship?Yes. It is important that the student reads the conditions of all scholarships as some only apply to domestic students, whilst others are specifically for international students. Is there an Orientation session?All of the faculties hold orientations sessions and some will requires compulsory attendance. You will receive information about orientation sessions once you have enrolled. Is there support /mentors available to me?A number of faculties offer this service which normally is made available during orientation. How will applications be judged?This depends on the type of scholarships applied for. You should read about the specific criteria for each scholarship. The VC’s scholarships are judged primarily on academic merit based on OP score (or equivalent), then on your demonstrated leadership qualities, community service, extracurricular activities and referees reports. Will I begin studies the same time as other students?In most cases you will begin studies the same time as other university students unless informed otherwise by your course coordinator. Some Dean’s Scholars or Accelerated programs do start much earlier. What is the closing date?This will depend on which scholarship you are applying for. They should all be listed on the scholarships website. (www.scholarships.qut.edu.au) Who will contact me with the scholarship offer?Your Scholarships Officer will be in touch with you via mail or phone. Please ensure that the contact details that you provide on your application form are correct. How do I appeal?If you believe an error has been made with your scholarship application for admission you should first check the conditions of the scholarship and follow the procedures specified for lodging an appeal. Enrolment FAQsIf the scholarship says I need an OP of 1 – 2or Rank of 99 – 98 but I have not yet received my OP/Rank, do I still apply?If you think you are going to receive a high OP we encourage you to apply. QUT will cross match with QTAC when results are released. What if I don’t get the OP/Rank required?You will receive a letter indicating that you will not be considered for the scholarship as you have not met the conditions, and your application will not be considered further. Will I have to attend an interview?It is important to read the conditions as some scholarships do require an interview. Do I have to list a QUT course as my first preference?It is important to read the conditions as some scholarships may request that you have a QUT degree program as your first preference, or you may be required to change your QTAC preferences if you are offered the scholarship. Conditions FAQsWhat if I decide to leave QUT even though I have not completed my degree?It is important that you contact the Scholarships Coordinator and Course Coordinator to inform them of your decision. You will also be requested to provide written advice about your decision as your scholarship will no longer apply. Can I defer my scholarship?No you cannot defer your scholarship. Please refer to the conditions of the scholarship. What if I decide to take a leave of absence?Normally you are not able to take a leave of absence and remain a scholarship holder. You will relinquish your current scholarship and be required to apply upon your return to QUT. One exception is the Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship, where students can take approved leave of absence for up to 12 months once they have undertaken at least one semester if their studies at QUT. What if I want to change my course, will I still retain my scholarship?It is important to read the conditions of the scholarship that you are applying for. In some cases you may need to contact your scholarships officer/course coordinator who will advise you on what steps you need to take. Can I transfer my scholarship to another university?If you are the recipient of a QUT scholarship, you cannot transfer your scholarship to another university. What Grade Point Average (GPA) / Marks will I need to retain my scholarship?To continue receiving your scholarship, students must remain enrolled in full time studies. Some scholarships require you to maintain a particular grade point average. Please check the conditions of your scholarship. What if I have circumstances out of my control and I fall below the required GPA?If there are some exceptional mitigating circumstances, the university will take this into consideration before making any decision to terminate a scholarship. Do I have to be a full-time student to receive a scholarship?Most scholarships are offered to students who are full-time. Please read the conditions of the scholarship. What other benefits are available to me as a scholarship holder?Some students will be offered the opportunity to represent the university as Student Ambassadors, attend event functions for their faculty, and attend photo shoots for the undergraduate and postgraduate publications. Other scholarships provide work experience or sponsorships. Financial Support FAQsIs the scholarship taxed?Most QUT scholarships are regarded as income so there may be implications for taxation and/or Centrelink benefits etc. Students should contact the ATO or visit the website: Will this scholarship affect my Centrelink payment?Student should contact their nearest Centrelink office for more information. How is the scholarship paid?Depending on the scholarship there are two common methods of payment:
When is my scholarship paid?Most scholarships are paid after census dates e.g. March & August. This will depend on your scholarship type. What fees are paid?This will depend on the type of scholarship as some scholarships will pay:
Scholarships may also include a component of compulsory industry placement which can be paid or unpaid employment. Vice-Chancellor Scholarship FAQsHow do I apply?To apply for this scholarship program, you need to complete the application form by 26 November 2010. You can ask your Guidance Officer for an application form or download the application form from this website. Can I apply for other scholarships?You should apply for all scholarships for which you are eligible. In most cases you will be awarded only one. If your application is successful QUT will contact you with the offer of your scholarship as soon as possible, so you can make an informed decision about which offer you would like to accept. Which students are eligible for the Vice-Chancellor's Scholarships?Eligibility is open to high-performing domestic or international students who have completed their secondary studies in Australia (subject to Vice-Chancellor's Scholarship terms and conditions) who receive an OP 1 or OP 2 (or equivalent rank for interstate students). This will also include students who have taken a one or two year break from study after year 12, and who are entering a University for the first time on the basis of their Year 12 results. Up to five additional scholarships will be offered to students who excel in sport, and who are also high academic achievers. Students must be competing at a national or international level and will be considered for a scholarship if they have achieved an OP 1 to 5 (or equivalent interstate entry rank). What if I decide not to continue studying at QUT?The scholarship will no longer apply. What if I decide to take a leave of absence?Students can take leave of absence for 12 months once they have undertaken at least one semester of their studies at QUT. Can I defer the scholarship?No. Please refer to the conditions of the Vice-Chancellor's Scholarship Program. How will my applications be judged?Applicants will only be considered if they compete at a national or international level within their chosen sport and also receive an OP 1 to 5 (or equivalent). What if I don't get the OP/Rank required?You will receive a letter indicating that you will not be considered for the scholarship as you have not met the conditions, and your application will not be considered any further. What if I don't get the OP required but compete at a national or international level in my chosen sport?QUT has been recognised as an 'Elite Athlete friendly' University, by both the Australian Institute of Sport and the Australian Sports Commission. What grade point average will I need to retain my scholarship?To maintain the scholarship, students must remain enrolled in full-time studies and receive and maintain a grade point average of at least 5 over a full year. What if I have circumstances out of my control and I am below the grade point average?If there are special mitigating circumstances, the relevant faculty selection panel will take this into consideration before making a decision to terminate the scholarship. Please contact the Scholarships Coordinator on 07 3138 7624. Can I do a double degree?Yes. Who will contact me with the offer?The Scholarships Officer will be in touch with you. Please ensure that the contact details you provide on your application form will apply after 27 November 2009. How will applications be judged?Primarily on academic merit judged on OP score (or equivalent), and your final subject results, then on your demonstrated leadership qualities, community service, extracurricular activities and referees reports. If applicable, your demonstrated sporting achievements at a national or international level will also be considered. How much is the scholarship worth?Seventy scholarships, valued at up to $24 000 each (paid at $6000 per year for up to four years) and 125 scholarships, valued at $6000 each (paid at $2000 per semester over one-and-a-half years), will be awarded annually. An additional five scholarships will be offered to high-achieving students who excel in sport. To be eligible for the sporting scholarships you must be competing at a national level and have achieved an OP 1 to 5 (or equivalent entry ranks). These scholarships are valued at up to $24,000 each (paid at $6000 per year for up to four years). What courses are eligible for a scholarship?The scholarships will be offered across all QUT faculties. Can I change my enrolment and still keep the scholarship?You can change your degree but you must remain enrolled in full-time studies at QUT. Will this affect my payment?These scholarships will be counted as income. Students should contact their nearest Centrelink office for further advice and visit the ATO website. |
